Jamie Foxx Gives More (False?) Hope About ‘Spawn’

A new feature film adaptation of Spawn has been in the works for ages. And by “in the works” I mean that creator Todd McFarlane and — more recently — producer Jason Blum have been swearing up and down that it’s happening. There have been rumors that Jamie Foxx is attached to star in the project and also whispers of big developments recently but nothing has been officially stated for the record.

But, man, it really does seem like Jamie Foxx is set to star in Spawn and it really does seem like things are moving forward.

Foxx spoke with Yahoo about his new Netflix film, Project Power and in his interview, he touched upon Spawn and its future. His quote:

I surprised Todd McFarlane. I said, ‘Bro, I know that one day you will do this movie, and I hope you will keep me in mind.’ What Black Panther did was let us know that it’s so necessary, and it’s the time. And Spawn is just an interesting character in itself. The heads that are being put together to bring you something special – look out.

Make no mistake, Foxx’s involvement in the movie would be a huge boost to the production: Foxx is a big, big name. And he would be perfect to star as the titular character because he’s a talented actor who could bring the dramatic and tragic gravitas that the superhero requires.

That being said, I am still not going to believe in a new Spawn film until I am in a theater watching it. It’s one of those projects that gets talked about over and over again but never really materializes. At least that’s what I thought. But maybe there is hope for Spawn, maybe it is happening.

As a reminder of Spawn’s potential, here’s a trailer for the old HBO animated series, which is apparently currently available on HBO Now:

Hat tip to Dark Horizons for the news.
