One of the most beloved comedies of all time is getting a remake with two of the biggest stars on Earth.

The comedy? John Hughes’s Planes, Trains and Automobiles, originally starring Steve Martin and John Candy. The remake will star Will Smith and Kevin Hart and is set to be written by Brooklyn 99 scribe Aeysha Carr. No director is attached.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles is easily one of the most cherished — and best — comedies of the 80s. It’s about a pair of radically different strangers who are stuck together on a journey across the country after their flight home for Thanksgiving gets canceled. Martin played the straight-laced business man and Candy was the gregarious and big-hearted chap who played the perfect foil to Martin’s demeanor. It’s one of the best buddy comedy films ever made and contains some great laughs, wonderful pacing and plotting and true heart.

Speaking of “heart”, the casting for this remake is pretty impressive. Smith and Hart are two of the largest stars in Hollywood and getting them to team up is a brilliant move. It’s great to see them being paired together in a comedy that’s not some cop story or sci-fi yarn or spoof. If it’s anything like the original, this Planes, Trains and Automobiles remake will be a straight-up comedy, no crazy bells or whistles.

I don’t know how many changes Carr will make to the original story but I am assuming the characters will stay pretty similar to the ones Martin and Candy played. I would love to see Smith portray the loud, boisterous part while Hart plays the mild-mannered, grumpy business man. It’ll be exciting to see Hart play against someone who isn’t Dwayne Johnson.
