Back in 2016, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg released Sausage Party, a weird little animated film about food products having sex and renouncing God. It was alright, and at the very least, supplied a much needed satire of the Pixar/Dreamworks animated films. It didn’t exactly blow the world up, but it was, in fact, well reviewed and quite profitable, so it’s a bit of a surprise there wasn’t an immediate followup.
And now there is! Per Variety, Rogen and Goldberg will re-teaming with Sony Pictures Animation to produce Bubble, an adaptation of a scripted comedy podcast of the same name, originally published on the Maximum Fun network. The podcast’s creator, Jordan Morris, will be writing what is being described as an animated feature for mature audiences. Here’s the pitch:
Welcome to Fairhaven, a literal Bubble of corporate utopia set amid the wild, imp-infested Brush. The first scripted comedy series from Maximum Fun, Bubble tells a tale that is both contemporary and otherworldly, as a small band of monster killers struggles to make ends meet and find love in a nightmarish version of the gig economy.
I’m not sure I can quite wrap my head around that at this point, but in general terms I’d say any new Rogen and Goldberg is a positive development, and I expect I’ll be seeking this out on whatever platform they’re releasing such things in 2022, or whenever. If you’re curious, the podcast is currently available for download.
