The G.I. Joe franchise has had its fair share of ups and downs. The ups would be the first film, 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra. The downs would be…well, anything after that.
But Paramount is trying to more-or-less forget anything but Rise of the Cobra and are moving full speed ahead on Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins, the newest Joe film that is due to hit theaters in October. As the title suggests, Snake Eyes will focused on the silent masked ninja character rather than the team as a whole.
But what comes after Snake Eyes? Apparently more G.I. Joe. THR says Paramount is making another Joe film, tasking Seberg writers Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse with script duties on a new movie. The next Joe movie will not be a direct sequel to Snake Eyes but rather “an expansion to take audience goers deeper into the world of Joe.”
We don’t know who will direct this brand new project and we don’t even know if it’ll truly happen. What if Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins bombs horribly at the box office? Will Paramount and Hasbro continue to embark on this quest for more Joe films? Or will they just throw in the towel and get the hint? I’m not saying that Snake Eyes will bomb, it’s not a foregone conclusion. But I also don’t feel a deep desire from audiences for another one of these movies. The series never launched into the stratosphere like Paramount had hoped. But who knows, maybe 2020 is the year that audiences are dying for a new G.I. Joe movie. Stranger things have happened.
Speaking of things happening, a lot is going on for Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse. Seberg wasn’t a huge hit but it has led to this new G.I. Joe project as well as being signed on to write the adaptation of the comic book Ex Machina. THR also says that they did some uncredited work on Snake Eyes. So, yes, things are going well for the pair.
