It’s time for John Krasinski to take a break.
Deadline says that Jeff Nichols, the filmmaker behind Take Shelter and Midnight Special, will write and direct a third film in the Quiet Place franchise. The first film, written and directed by Krasinski, was a huge surprise hit when it landed in 2018. The sequel, also written and directed by Krasinski, was set debut a few months ago but got pushed because of the coronavirus. It is now set to premiere in April 2021. But before anyone sees that sequel comes word of a third edition in the series that is currently scheduled to hit theaters in 2022. You know, if we still have movie theaters then…
Nichols will be creating the movie based on an idea from Krasinski himself. Word is that the movie won’t be a direct sequel but rather a movie that builds out the universe. So you can probably say goodbye to Emily Blunt and her character. It is time to move on and widen the scope. I think that’s the right approach.
Paramount is really hot on A Quiet Place. The first one was much bigger than expected and, while the second movie hasn’t been released yet, it will likely also be a smash. It’s no surprise they want more of Krasinski’s whispering characters and the aliens who stalk them. Choosing Nichols is a bit of a surprise, though. While he has always turned in great work, he has never released a big blockbuster. But it goes to show that Paramount wants to keep the films feeling small and intimate, they’re not looking to turn A Quiet Place into something that it’s not.
