True Detective and No Time to Die director Cary Joji Fukunaga has been brought into the Apple TV+ fold.

The acclaimed filmmaker has signed on to direct the first three episodes of Masters of the Air, the Spielberg-Hanks-produced WWII series that will air on Apple TV+. The show was already a must-see before Fukunaga became involved. His attachment only makes this thing even more red hot.

The show will follow the brave fighter pilots who brought the war to Hitler’s homeland. It follows the tradition of Band of Brothers and The Pacific, which proved to be huge hits for HBO. Apple TV+ really scored when they landed this project. It was a smart acquisition for a few reasons. Firstly, it’s the sort of high-brow, A-talent project that will hopefully put Apple TV+ in the same league as the other big boys. Secondly, it’s a good middle finger move to HBO, which was always the home to the Spielberg-Hanks WWII events. Apple stole away one of their prized possessions!

Fukunaga’s career is proving to be quite interesting indeed. He has an incredible eye and is wickedly talented and, as his career goes on, he seems to be aiming for big, populist projects. Some wondered what he would tackle after No Time to Die. It seems like he’s teaming up with Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Apple. Not a bad call, Cary!
