We just recently reported that Jamie Foxx will reprise his role as Electro for Jon Watts’s Spider-Man 3. It was surprising news because 1) people didn’t really care for Foxx’s Electro the first time around and 2) he appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which exists in a different cinematic continuity than the current Spidey series. You know the deal: The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was made when Spider-Man was solely a Sony property, before it was transitioned into a Sony-Marvel franchise.
Now we have more news about Spider-Man 3 (or whatever it’ll be called) and it puts the Foxx casting into perspective.
Benedict Cumberbatch will appear in the movie, once again playing Marvel hero Doctor Strange. Cumberbatch will be one busy bloke, seeing as he will be filming his part in Spider-Man 3 around the same time he will be working on Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. That word “Multiverse” is important because it seems pretty likely that Strange will introduce its concept to Spider-Man in the third film. That would explain how Jamie Foxx (and J.K. Simmons) could appear in the new Spider-Man movies after existing in different cinematic universes. Strange’s inclusion in the sequel assures us that Marvel is about to really start exploring multiple universes. Hey, I thought that was DC’s thing…
I am curious to see just how wild Marvel Studios gets with Spider-Man 3. How many previous Spidey stars are going to appear in the film? Tobey Maguire? Kirsten Dunst? Andrew Garfield? I pray they allow Paul Giamatti to ham it up once again as Rhino. Swing for the fences, Marvel!
