Denis Villeneuve Talks Worms!

I’m dying for a Dune trailer. I’m dying for more Dune images. I’m dying for anything related to Dune. Perhaps that is why I am getting excited over quotes about worms.

Speaking with Empire Magazine (via IndieWire) Villeneuve opened up about the process to make the iconic sandworms for Dune. The giant beasts exist on the planet of Arrakis and have become the most popular visual images to come out of Frank Herbert’s books. People might not know a lot about Dune but they do know there are giant sandworms in it.

Here’s what Villeneuve had to say about the work put into crafting these mammoth monsters:

“We talked about every little detail that would make such a beast possible, from the texture of the skin, to the way the mouth opens, to the system to eat its food in the sand. It was a year of work to design and to find the perfect shape that looked prehistoric enough.”

That sounds like a man who is taking this all very seriously and that is exactly what we want to hear. Villeneuve has repeatedly said how devoted he is to this project and how it’s his attempt at making something akin to Star Wars. He isn’t half-assing this thing at all. The fact that he is putting so much effort into the anatomy of sandworms just proves that this movie is going to be a living, breathing, massive creation.

I think Dune has a chance to be something really special and something that blows people away. We know that the movie will be a visual marvel, Villeneuve’s involvement promises that. But we should also take comfort in knowing that the filmmaker is putting all of his energy and effort into the movie. Every detail will be perfected to match his vision.
