Jackpot! Sony Expands Its Spider-Man Universe

IMG_1011.jpeg

Sony Pictures is hellbent on making its expanded Spider-Man cinematic universe happen. They have Venom 2 on the way, as well as Morbius and potentially Madame Web and Kraven the Hunter movies in the works too. They don’t have the full rights to Spidey himself, of course, but they are trying damn hard to create a bunch of films about characters related to him.

The latest will be apparently be a movie based on Jackpot, the lesser-known female superhero introduced back in 2007. Sony Pictures has hired Marc Guggenheim (writer for comics such as Aquaman, Superman/Batman and The CW’s Arrow) to pen a script based on the character. Guggenheim has a lot of experience with Jackpot seeing as how he has written multiple issues of the series. He will feel right at home bringing her to the big screen.

Who is Jackpot, you say? That’s a totally valid question since she isn’t well known. She is Sara Ehret, a mother-to-be whose DNA is re-coded with superpowers during pregnancy. It is only after her child is born that Ehret realizes she has superhuman strength and goes to great lengths to fight crime and protect her loved ones.

It is interesting to watch Sony pick and choose which Spider-Man characters to adapt. They obviously made the right choice with Venom, that movie was a big hit. Morbius will likely make a decent chunk of change too. But a Kraven movie? Madame Web? And now Jackpot? Part of me wants to applaud for the daring risks but another part of me wants to tell Sony to temper their expectations.
