What if 'Furiosa' was a prequel, and not Charlize Theron?

Speaking to The New York Times, crazy/great director George Miller had this to say about the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road followup, focused on Charlize Theron’s breakout character Imperator Furiosa:

“For the longest time, I thought we could just use CG de-aging on Charlize, but I don’t think we’re nearly there yet. Despite the valiant attempts on ‘The Irishman,’ I think there’s still an uncanny valley. Everyone is on the verge of solving it, particular Japanese video-game designers, but there’s still a pretty wide valley, I believe.”

That’s some shade on The Irishman, but it also points at a film with a few distinct differences from the last one, a Best Picture nominee, if you recall. Specifically, we’re not getting Theron back, which for me was pretty much the entire appeal of returning to the character. Additionally, I’d probably rather see what happened after the events of Fury Road, considering that we pretty much know all but the details of Furiosa’s backstory, and have in fact seen the ultimate resolution of that backstory. All the reasons prequels aren’t great, you know.

But it’s happening, so let’s hope Miller makes a good movie. It’ll probably be Florence Pugh or Anya Taylor-Joy, whoever’s got the better agent, or whoever’s willing to shave their head. Whichever. But it will also have to wait, as Miller will first be getting to work on Three Thousand Years of Longing, starring Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton. Not too many details on that, but the rumor is that it’s a romance involving a genie. Whatever, you crazy!
