Cartoon Network’s The Powerpuff Girls was a cute, fun, inventive show that ran from 1998 to 2005. The show had quite a lasting hold on audiences, as it was then rebooted in 2016. Those who watched it as kids still hold a special place in their hearts for the series, which was always a bit more clever than you’d assume just by looking at it.
Now more than 20 years after it originally debuted, The Powerpuff Girls is getting a live-action reboot. This new iteration of the show will be produced by TV super-producer Greg Berlanti and screenwriter Diablo Cody. Heather Regnier of Veronica Mars will also produce and write the script alongside Cody.
Who were The Powerpuff Girls? They were three little sisters: Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup. Created in a lab and crafted with special powers, they could fly and beat ass while staying ridiculously adorable and innocent. They were young and carefree.
And now they’ll be older and jaded, it seems. The live-action reboot will find our three heroes as “disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting.” That’s a markedly different approach to the characters. While it may end up being interesting, one hopes this new show doesn’t lose the fun of the original series. The spirit and tone of the show was one of the best things about it.
