Frame Work: The Original Baldur's Gate

baldurs.jpg

This week on Frame Work, we’re joined by one of the greats from the old Chud boards, the estimable Mr. Brad Millette, to discuss a classic old school video game, and a very early Bioware title, Baldur’s Gate, a formative game for the company and for all RPGs. We’re talking about its use of strict Dungeons and Dragons rules, even the dreaded THAC0, about the push and pull between freedom and narrative in game storytelling, the introduction of relationship and sex into games, and even a bit about Beneath the Planet of the Apes. And also about the challenges of playing old games, because as it turns out, sometimes the medium has moved on.

We’re looking to keep exploring the history of Bioware, so you can expect to see more of these, although considering how long these games are, it might be a little while in between. And of course, if you’re interested in previous episodes, including the D&D chat that inspired this one, you can find us on the podcast app of your choice. Just look for the art below!
