“Bring us more Cate Blanchett casting news!” the crowd screams. “More jobs for the chameleonic two-time Oscar winner, equally adept at highbrow and lowbrow! More opportunities to show her range!” They shriek, and froth at the mouth.
And more there shall be. Announced today by Variety, she’ll be appearing in two new films, from two exciting directors. First is Don’t Look Up, for McKay, a “dark satire in the school of Wag the Dog, Dr. Strangelove and Network.” It’s about mid-level astronomers who discover the world is going to end in six months and try to warn humanity of their impending doom. That sounds pretty damn timely, and suggests McKay’s made good use of his time at home. Jennifer Lawrence is starring as well, and it sounds like it’ll be a Netflix film.
The second is Armageddon Times, from Ad Astra’s James Gray. A little less is known on this one, but it’s reportedly semi-autobiographical, and focused on Gray’s time at Kew-Forest School in Queens, the same school Donald Trump attended. Variety notes the principal will play a major role, so maybe that’s who Blanchett plays. Maybe this one is timely too.
Those are two very For Real sounding movies, and she is of course linked to Eli Roth’s Borderlands as well. You can also see her currently bumming everyone out on Hulu’s Mrs. America, and her episode of WTF with Marc Maron dropped today as well. Soon, all media will feature the Blanchett.
