Chris Pine is going to be a thief. But he is going to be a thief with a conscious. Awwwww.
Pine is in negotiations to star in The Saint, the latest remake of the popular novel/TV series from long ago that is set to be directed by Rocketman filmmaker Dexter Fletcher.
The Saint is about Simon Templar, a criminal who steals from the rich and gives to the poor...while keeping a small cut of the goods for himself. Templar has a moral code that ruffles many feathers and creates multiple enemies, including law enforcement. But how can you try to capture a man doing the right thing? Come on!
Those who remember the 90s well will recall a Saint film starring Val Kilmer that hit theaters back in 1997. That movie featured Kilmer wearing a bunch of kooky disguises while trying to steal the formula for cold fusion. The movie did alright for itself, making $61 million in the states. But it never spawned any sort of sequel and definitely did not re-ignite America’s love for The Saint.
Pine is a great choice for the leading role or, really, any leading role. I have always felt that he doesn’t get the sort of respect he deserves because he is genuinely a terrific performer. Just rewatch Hell Or High Water if you don’t believe me. My only hope is that The Saint allows Pine to show off his acting skills rather than just relying on his boyish good looks and devilish charm.
