What’s the last buddy-cop film you liked? I can’t think of a recent one. I can think of a few buddy-cop movies that attempted — but failed — to be good but nothing that has stuck with me. Hell, I can’t even think of a good buddy-buddy comedy either, one that doesn’t even involve cops! There was a time when Hollywood turned this puppies out every week and now, now we have nothing.
Well, maybe not nothing. Netflix’s upcoming Coffee & Kareem looks pretty damn good. The film has a trailer and a few posters below and they’re all promising. The trailer is especially funny and charming, mostly due to co-lead Terrence Little Gardenhigh, who looks like a damn gem. And Ed Helms seems like his old self again, which is good because it’s also been awhile since I’ve really enjoyed an Ed Helms film.
The film is about a police officer who gets mixed up in a whole lot of dangerous trouble with his girlfriend’s son. Watch the trailer and enjoy:
See, pretty good, right? The jokes land, the chemistry seems on-point and this has the added benefit of being a Netflix release, meaning you’ll be able to watch Coffee & Kareem from the comfort of your own couch.
Let’s be honest, a movie like this just wouldn’t work if the actor playing the kid wasn’t solid but Gardenhigh looks very, very solid. In fact, you can already tell he’s going to be the best part of this movie. So, yes, the plot seems fairly basic and you definitely get a sense of been there-done that but, hey, it still looks fun and you still want to see Helms and Gardenhigh go at it.
So, yeah, I’m on board with Coffee & Kareem. Hopefully it triggers a wave of Hollywood creating a slew of new buddy-cop films. Fingers crossed.
