Death Returns: A New ‘Final Destination’ Approaches

IMG_0825.jpeg

It’s been awhile since we’ve enjoyed a Final Destination film, hasn’t it? The last movie, Final Destination 5, was released back in 2011 but since then it’s been radio silence after years of a new Destination film every few years.

I honestly kind of miss them. The series was certainly very hit-or-miss but it always had a great concept and usually delivered on gory, fun deaths for its poor characters. So, yes, it was hit-or-miss but when it hit, it hit big.

Well, there is another Final Destination in the works. Producer Craig Perry has been trying to put together Final Destination 6 for ages and it seems to be moving right along. We don’t know much about the movie, if it’ll be a sequel or reboot or remake. But we do know that it’ll be “a lot of fun.”

That’s according to Perry, who spoke with Digital Spy about the upcoming movie. He gave a bit of insight into where the series could be headed and which unfortunate souls will be hounded down by death this time.

We’re toying with having it take place in the world of first responders: EMTs, firemen and police. These people deal with death on the front lines every day, and make choices that can cause people to live or die.

We rely on their good judgement, expertise and calm demeanour. So why not put those people in the nightmare situation where every choice can bring about life and death – but now for themselves?

We’re thinking that world might be an interesting way into a Final Destination movie, and one which can also generate unique set pieces in a very credible way.

Jeffrey Riddick, creator of the movies, gave his input on the new movie as well:

I’ve been talking to Craig [Perry] and the concept behind it is unique. I think reboot is probably too strong of a word, it makes it sound like they’re going to change everything, but it’s definitely a Final Destination movie.

“Definitely a Final Destination movie” sounds really good to me. While I would like new characters and new scenarios and obviously new graphic demises, I still want a Final Destination movie to always be a Final Destination movie. They don’t need to reinvent the wheel here, they need to retain what makes these movies devilishly fun. Don’t over-complicate things, don’t try to alter the way things work. Just give us a bunch of unlucky schmucks who disrupt Death’s intentions and then get picked off one by one.

I really hope Perry and Riddick put together something special. It’s always fun to see what ridiculously complicated and enjoyable approaches Death takes to off people. Would it make more sense to just give someone an aneurism instead of making them fall and slip on a bunch of knives or be smashed by a giant plate of glass or sliced into pieces by a projectile barbed wire fence? Sure it would but that’s not nearly as fun. C’mon, let Death have its fun.
