You need to make peace with the fact that Indiana Jones 5 is going to happen. Protest all you want, fuss and fight for hours on end but you WILL be subjected to Indy 5 within the next few years and you WILL thank Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas for bringing it to you.
You’ll also possibly thank screenwriter David Koepp, because he just revealed to Den of Geek that he is once again working on the script for the long-in-development project. He’s apparently trying to crack the story and, based on the quote he gave the site, doesn’t seem too enthused. Don’t take it from me, here are Koepp’s words:
I don’t know how much you can talk about Indiana Jones 5. You were working on it for a bit, and you’re not anymore.
I actually am again. I’m working on it again. We’re still trying. And I think we’ve got a good idea this time. We’ll see
“We’ll see”? You’re giving us a “we’ll see”? You do understand that many, many people damn near worship this franchise, Mr. Koepp? Providing a lackadaisical and ho-hum answer with little enthusiasm about the movie doesn’t really instill much joy or confidence in Indy fans everywhere. But, hey, can you blame him? It’s hard to write movies, even harder to write ones that will be picked apart piece-by-piece when released. And let’s be honest, the demand for Indiana Jones 5 isn’t through the roof. Yes, people want to see it but after Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (also written by Koepp) expectations are definitely much more in check. So Koepp has a lot of fans to win back. He obviously wants to do things correctly, he’s got a lot riding on his shoulders. I guess I don’t blame him for not being overly enthusiastic.
Many people are so torn about Indiana Jones 5. Despite what you may remember, Crystal Skull isn’t as much of a train wreck as some say. But it’s not great and pales in comparison to earlier installments. Countless fans just want the series to be done with, let Harrison Ford hang up the hat and whip. But those same fans also get a thrilling shiver up their spines when they think about seeing Ford in costume one last time. We can’t help it, Indiana Jones is just one of those characters. Even a subpar Indiana Jones film is one I want to see. I love the way Spielberg crafts these movies and, regardless of the material, I’ll never tire of Ford playing the part.
That being said, Koepp needs to do this right. If he takes his time, creates a solid script and delivers it to Spielberg before he runs off to make a different movie then we may finally get a great Indiana Jones movie again. Crystal Skull could be a blip on the radar and not Indy’s sad swan song.
