Netflix and Theater Chains Are Feuding Over ‘The Irishman’

First Sony and Marvel, now Netflix and movie theater companies? Will the in-fighting in Hollywood ever end?!

The NY Times is reporting that the streaming behemoth and a couple of theater chains are in deep negotiations about the release of Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, the highly anticipated crime drama that is set to premiere exclusively on Netflix by year’s end. Apparently these talks have just started up again after falling apart back in the summer and they revolve around one thing: the release model for The Irishman.

Netflix is actively talking with both AMC and Cineplex, two chains that collectively own nearly 13,000 theaters in North America. Of course both chains want to carry the film, it’s a Scorsese movie after all. But they want a window of time when the film will ONLY play in theaters, before it streams on Netflix. That’s been a common sticking point for many chains and Hollywood figures when talking about Netflix: many people want Netflix to release their films in theaters for an extended amount of time before they start streaming, which honestly defeats the purpose of Netflix.

This time AMC and Cineplex are asking that Scorsese’s film plays solely in theaters for nearly a whopping three months before it starts streaming on Netflix.

As you can imagine Netflix isn’t very happy about this request. While they want their films to play in theaters nationwide, they do not want to radically alter their entire structure and purpose. Three months in cinemas before it’s available on Netflix? That transforms the company from a streaming service into an old fashioned movie studio, just like all the others. I can’t see any way on Earth that Netflix agrees to this, it’s just too high a number for them.

Hopefully the negotiations come to a conclusion soon and all parties come to an agreement. While I’m definitely not against watching The Irishman in the comfort of my own home, I want it to be available to as many people as possible. And while the home access to movies is nice, I can’t disagree that there’s nothing like watching a movie in theaters. It’s a magical experience, especially when it’s a new Scorsese film. Plus that’s what the director himself wants, he is actively rooting for the movie to get a robust national release. So a deal will likely be struck but what will the final release schedule for The Irishman end up being? Will the movie theater chains get their way or, like many times before, will Netflix alter the way audiences see movies?
