Netflix Has Selected Its Selena

You may have forgotten but Netflix is currently putting together a new series about the life and career of the late queen of Tejano music, Selena Quintanilla. If you haven’t been paying attention since the mid-1990s, Quintanilla found major success with her great voice, memorable fashion choices and all around wonderful personality. Sadly her life was cut short when she was shot and killed by her associate, Yolanda Saldívar. Her level of fame only rose after her death and a popular film about her starring a then-hardly-known Jennifer Lopez.

Netflix’s upcoming Selena series has now made the most important casting choice: they’ve landed their Selena. Christian Serratos, best known for her work on The Walking Dead, has been tapped to portray Selena in the two-season series that begins production next month, according to Vulture. While Serratos doesn’t look as close to Quintanilla as Jennifer Lopez did, she certainly does look the part. But can she carry a tune like Selena did? Can she dance like Selena did? Netflix sure thinks so, as do Selena’s father, sister and attorney — all three of them are producing the new series.

The show will follow Selena’s life and rocket ride to fame. Two seasons gives the show much more time to develop Selena than the previous film did and that’s great news. Don’t get me wrong, the Jennifer Lopez movie has become a 90s staple but it had to compact a whole lot of information into a shorter run time. Selena lived a lot of life in her short time and the Netflix series will likely be able to touch upon a lot more.

We don’t know who else will star in the show but you should keep your eye on this one. Selena still has a rabid, devoted fan base and has achieved legendary status for much of the country. If Netflix has any sense at all (they do) then they know they have a potential hit on their hands here.
