Chris Pine Will Play Another 70s Icon: John Dean

Just a few weeks ago, we read how Chris Pine was going to play Walter Cronkite, legendary news anchor and voice of the nation for more than thirty years. And now it seems that Pine isn’t done playing real-life people who altered the future of our country because we are getting word that Pine will be playing John Dean, one of President Nixon’s lawyers and a man who helped bring about the downfall of the president.

Pine will play Dean in a new project for Amazon, which will be all about the life and political dramas surrounding Dean and his association with Nixon and the Watergate scandal. While originally Nixon’s counsel, Dean ended up being one of the biggest thorns in his side because he turned on the president and spilled the beans about all the illegal doings happening in the White House. For his part in the crimes, Dean spent four months under house arrest and pled guilty to obstruction of justice. Nixon, on the other hand, lost the presidency and was forever disgraced until his death decades later. I know that sounds harsh but don’t feel bad for him!

Dean has become a public face again in the last few years, speaking out against President Trump and repeatedly comparing him to Nixon. The man is very vocal of his opinions so it’s no surprise that he will be producing this story of his life. I wonder if he insisted that an attractive young man play him. I’m not saying that John Dean is atrocious by any means but casting Chris Pine as a younger version of yourself is a pretty cocky thing to do. Smooth move, Mr. Dean.

There haven’t been many movies about the events around Watergate, at least not from inside this Oval Office. While All The President’s Men is a damn classic, it was a story told from the outside. A movie about John Dean could grant viewers access to what went down inside 1600 Pennsylvania and the paranoia, fear and chaos that ensued once it became obvious that Nixon’s time was up. It was a fascinating, wild time in American history and it’s a story that needs to be told time and time again — especially from those who saw it all firsthand.
