Oh God, I Do Not like This Deepfake Video with Bill Hader
Folks, we are living in the future. And with it comes some terrible new realities: climate change, food shortages, Trump, terrorism. And deepfake videos.
For those who don’t know, deepfake videos use a new technology that allows editors to literally place someone’s face on someone else. Think Armie Hammer in The Social Network. It’s creepy as hell. Lately, deepfake master Ctrl Shift Face has been traumatizing the world with his videos, showing just how damn disturbing this tech is.
Below is Ctrl Shift Face’s latest, which uses a clip of Bill Hader from an episode of The Late Show. Hader, a wonderful impressionist, takes on the personas of both Tom Cruise and Seth Rogen and…well, you just have to watch.
NOTE: Do not watch if you’ve even had one damn hit of any sort of marijuana-related drug.
Holy moly, that made me feel uneasy. The smoothness of the transition — Hader to Cruise, Cruise to Hader, Hader to Rogen to Cruise — just made me feel like I was watching some hellish fever dream. Ctrl Shift Face is a damn master and I don’t know if that’s a good thing.
Obviously there are dangerous implications for deepfake videos. Many fear that future elections could be swayed by deepfake videos that put politicians in unfortunate and fabricated situations. Imagine Elizabeth Warren (or whoever the Democrats nominate) having to battle not only Donald Trump but also internet hoax videos that have her “saying” she hates America or some shit. Troubling, isn’t it?
But, for now, let’s just watch the video above and think fondly of the days before the internet and the wicked witchcraft it hath brought.
