Holland vs Hardy? Sony Reportedly Wants Venom in ‘Spider-Man 3’

Even though we haven’t even laid eyes on Spider-Man: Far From Home we know that there will be a follow-up to it. Spider-Man 3, or whatever it is called (Spider-Man: Home Run? Spider-Man: Home, Home on The Range?) is going to happen. Even with the bad posters we know that Far From Home will be a monster hit and guarantee another sequel.

So who will star in said sequel? Who will Spidey go toe-to-toe with? If one proven Twitter user is to be believed, it might be Tom Hardy’s Venom. Roger Wardell, who has somehow been very accurate on previous Marvel movie rumors, tweeted this out yesterday:

As I said, Wardell has been right before and this rumor isn’t too far-fetched when you think about it. Venom, despite receiving awful reviews, did incredibly well at the box office, even better than you remember. And the titular character is one of Spider-Man’s biggest villains, especially among fans. Plus many people have been so let down by both Topher Grace and Tom Hardy’s take on the character so another shot at the baddie, again played by Hardy (who wasn’t the problem with Venom) would make fans giddy and hopeful. I can see this coming together, especially now that Sony is so friendly with Disney/Marvel.

Ah, but there’s the rub. The tweet says that this is what Sony wants. However, what does Disney/Marvel want? Sony still owns the Venom character and has a say in the Spider-Man movies too but they’re not the big dogs in this fight. Make no mistake: Disney is running the show here. No one short of Jesus Christ has the power and clout of Disney. If they don’t want Venom in Spider-Man 3 then there will be no Venom in Spider-Man 3. If they’re willing to hear Sony out, however, this could happen. Or it could lead to the end of their relationship.

There are a lot of hoops to jump through and of course the rumor needs to be taken with a grain of salt but it is a possibility. A few years ago I would have laughed at such a suggestion but now that Disney and Sony have come closer together, you can’t write this off just yet. I’ll tell you one thing: seeing Tom Hardy go full-on wild-and-crazy evil would be a blast. No matter how bad the movie is, Hardy is always aces. Allowing him to run wild in the MCU would be delightful. Tom Holland wouldn’t know what hit him.
