...A Killer What? - Day 14
Attack of the Killer Donuts (2016)
A Killer What?
Donuts. Killer donuts. The lead character’s uncle is cooking up a re-animation serum (if you’re wondering if it’s fluorescent green and glows, of course it does) in his sister’s basement and through a convoluted series of events it ends up in the deep fat fryer at a donut store causing the donuts to grow teeth and bounce around biting and spitting acid at everyone they see.
Is It Any Good?
Nah. I mean, it’s not bad but there’s not a lot to recommend it. Obviously we’re not meant to take the concept of killer donuts seriously but it’s that knowledge of that fact on the part of the film-makers that really ruins the movie. Attack of the Killer Donuts is so broad and intentionally goofy that there’s nothing to cling to on either the serious or comedic ends of the spectrum. The movie goes big on comedy but the thing about comedy is that it only really works when it’s funny and Attack of the Killer Donuts is very unfunny. Its jokes are lazy, its tone is desperately reaching for a laugh, and its comedic timing is dire.
As for the donuts themselves, they’re generally rendered with cartoonish CGI adorably bouncing around like rubber balls. The amount of danger they pose to characters is unknowable and varies from scene to scene and character to character. The gore gags aren’t especially memorable and not even C. Thomas Howell can at his way out of this movie. It’s a shrug.
Watch, Toss, or Buy?
There’s not anything here that needs to be seen, feel free to toss it.
