...A Killer What? - Day 12
Strays (1991)
A Killer What?
Cats. Not mutant cats, not demon cats, just normal feral house-cats. Or specifically one bastard King-Cat that seems to be spurring the others to murder in some sort of weird unexplained Willard situation.
Is It Any Good?
It’s fine. Timothy Busfield (of Revenge of the Nerds and Trucks fame) and Kathleen Quinlan move their young daughter to a home in the country that’s just dense with feral cats. The cats are seemingly led by a fuzzy gray cat who looks like Church from Pet Sematary. The King-Cat makes several shows of dominance until finally they launch an all-out cat offensive on the family in a scene that’s not nearly as menacing as it wants to think it is.
This movie was obviously made by someone who hates the shit out of cats because the entire thing is laughable. It’s not that an army of house-cats couldn’t utterly destroy a person, it’s just that cats are solitary shit-head animals that don’t exactly co-operate well and while they’re formidable when they want to be they’re also tiny and adorably unintimidating. They also can’t actually pry open vents that are screwed into walls or chew through wooden doors.
For a made-for-TV movie with a silly premise, Strays is pretty watchable and not a bad way to spend an hour and 22 minutes but your life isn’t empty if you haven’t seen it.
Watch, Toss, or Buy?
It’s not exactly a gem but it’s enjoyable enough, though hard to find legally, give it a watch.
